Teeming
In 1988 the South Island Stone Sculpture Symposium was held at Spencer Park. This was the brain child of local sculptor Llew Summers who organised the venue and the transportation of 20blocks of Mt Somers stone to be delivered.
Throughout February and March of 1988, 20 artists worked on their creations. The project was supported by The Southern Regional Arts Council, The Waimairi District Council, QE11 Arts Council and Christchurch City Council.Teeming was made by local artist, Neville Sinclair, at the symposium.
It is the oldest of the Waimakariri public art works and was acquired by the Kaiapoi Borough Council. It was originally placed on the corner of Charles and Williams Street but due to congestion on the corner it was decided to move it. In 2003 it was moved to the entrance of the riverbank walkway along the north bank of the Kaiapoi river. The sculpture consists of 5 interlocking people covering the face of a cube shaped rock. The name Teeming was chosen because it is teeming with life.
