Karo
Andrew Drummond, a Christchurch artist was commissioned to create a sculpture to commemorate the 150 year anniversary of Blackwell's Department Store operating in Kaiapoi. It was unveiled on the riverside of Raven Quay opposite the store on 10th October 2010 by Andrew and Michael Blackwell.
The sculpture is one of Drummond’s wind activated leaf forms. It is fabricated in stainless steel with working parts that have been precision engineered. It has been hand finished and patinated to enhance the movement of the sculpture and is designed to operate in a range of wind speeds from light breezes through to high wind conditions.
The name Karo comes from the name of the plant on which it is based. Pittosporum Crassifolum, commonly called Karo is a small coastal tree, native to New Zealand and generally found in the top half of the North Island.
Andrew Drummond lives and works in Christchurch and his works are held in various public and private collections. From 1993 to 2003 he held the position as head of Sculpture at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts.
