The Old Ship’s Rib

To commemorate Kaiapoi’s 150th anniversary the Kaiapoi Community Board let a contract to provide art works on 5 chosen sights in Kaiapoi.

The contract was awarded to JBFx (JohnstoneBrothers Special Effects) now called Dream It.

The sculpture has a steel frame which supports the wooden structure of laminated kwila, and represents a rib from a sailing ship. It was made in the company's workshop at 1 Empire Rd and symbolises the importance of shipping on the Kaiapoi River.

Dean is from Burwood and lived most of his life in Kaiapoi until the 2011 earthquake. He is a selftaught signwriter by trade.
