The Crane

The Kaiapoi Community Board let a contract to provide art works on 5 chosen sights in Kaiapoi to commemorate its 150th year.

The contract was awarded to JBFx (Johnstone Brothers SpecialEffects) now called Dream It. The Crane is a steel structure which has been laser cut to represent a crane which was used to load ships on the Kaiapoi River. It holds up a net made of 5mm reinforcing mesh which was heated, shaped and welded. Inside the net are a number of stainless steel fish.It makes reference to the name Kaiapoi.

Kai meaning food and Poi meaning swing.The sculpture was severely damaged in the 2011 earthquake and has since been rebuilt.Dean is from Burwood and lived most of his life in Kaiapoi until the 2011 earthquake. He is a self taught signwriter by trade.
